WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP — Construction is underway for a new track and field complex at King’s College in Luzerne County.
The Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex already has a football field and baseball field. Soon, it will also have a new track and field complex.
“This is something that I’ve been dreaming of the last 10, 15 years,” said King’s College Track and Field Coach Mike Kolinovsky.
Right now, many of King’s College sports teams get their running in on the track at Kirby Park, but the cinder surface isn’t ideal.
“It’s really rocky, so you have to be careful, especially if it rains, there’s a lot of potholes,” said student Danielle Lisnock.
“We were kind of nomads the last year, because we were working out at local high school or Kirby Park. To have our own track is something that’s going to be phenomenal for our program,” said Kolinovsky.
The complex is expected to cost around $3 million. The school is picking up most of the tab, but it also received $130,000 in state taxpayer money to build it.
In return for the grant, the track will also be open to the public and community events.
“It’s showing that King’s wants to improve, wants to make this city even better,” said student Andrew Hubiak.
The new track and field is expected to be completed by September.
